Solar cells produced by a combination of silicon and perovskite perform well under high pressure

Solar cells produced from a combination of silicon and perovskite, especially variants containing mixed halides such as iodine and bromine, are more efficient and cheaper than traditional silicon solar cells because they can convert a greater proportion of sunlight into Electrical energy. However, perovskites degrade under the influence of light, so they cannot yet be used in commercial applications. Substituting cations (positively charged ions) in the structure can improve the stability of the material. Researchers from AMOLF have now revealed that this improvement comes from compressing the structure, which is equivalent to applying considerable pressure to it. They have published the results in “Cell Reports Physical Science”.
